DS Breaks 100M Sold Worldwide

Published: January 01, 0001 Reading Time: Approx. 8 mins

First released in 2004, Nintendo’s portable DS topped 100 million consoles sold last week, Nintendo reports.

That number includes combined total sales of DS, DS Lite and the soon to be released in North America DSi.

“Consumers have shown their love for Nintendo DS – 100 million times over,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “We are grateful that people of all ages continue to respond to our products, and we will continue to look for ways to please current gamers and create new ones.”

While 100 million is an impressive number, the DS will still have to top 119 million to topple Game Boy’s record-setting number. Of course, it took the Game Boy 16 years to hit that mark.

It took the DS about two and a [[link]] half years to hit the 50 million mark. The PlayStation Portable hit the 50 million mark last month, or about four years after its release in North America.
